Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, or SHPE for short, is a professional organization at the University of Florida. We are the source for quality hispanic engineering and technical talent.
Our mission is to connect our members to career opportunities, developing their leadership skills, as well as providing our members with fun activities and social events.
SHPE provides its membership with a wealth of opportunities and familial surrounding. We hold a series of infosessions year-round and bar-be-cues to meet the industry. We have a lot of socials and bi-weekly meetings. SHPE also keeps its members entertained with a creative series of ice breakers.
There are many benefits to joining SHPE, part of which is the many events and opportunities that you can find all over this site, such as the Goals for Tomorrow Scholarship, the Pitch for the Future Softball Tournament, and the many conferences that SHPE is a part of.
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community.
The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.
SHPE believes its strength comes from their members. "A Chapter of One" describes the unity we strive to promote in SHPE and its members. Each member of SHPE is an integral and important part of the SHPE chapter. Everyone has a part in the success of the organization.

The SHPE office is located in Weil 276 A. Our office telephone is (352) 846-3049. We have bulletin boards with information outside our office. Office hours will be posted up soon!
We welcome everyone to join SHPE, we always love new faces. To become a member of SHPE, just come to the meetings! To be a part of the national organization, you have to pay a $5 fee, which is the cheapest of all the engineering societies!
It's free to join the University of Florida chapter of
SHPE and attend any of its events. To be recognized by SHPE National though, you have to register online for $5.00 -- the lowest of any of the other national engineering societies.
No. But if you do, you'll receive a subscription to SHPE Magazine, a slot on your resume, and allow you to attend National and Regional SHPE Conferences. You'll also get brownie points.
The General Body Meetings are the easiest way to be involved in SHPE. This is when we come together to be with friends, eat delicious (free!) food. The meetings are a way to let members know of upcoming events and the state of SHPE.
Meetings are every two weeks, usually held at 6 o' clock. They are announced via our list-serve, our meetings, and our website on the front page and also the General Body Meeting bulletin board.
The "Goals for Tomorrow" soccer tournament is our Spring semester scholarship fundraising event. We host a soccer tournament at Flavet Field and get teams to come from all over UF and even the state of Florida in order to raise money, which we give to one of our freshman members as a scholarship. It's a good event and a good cause. To know more about the "Goals for Tomorrow" tournament and how to get involved, talk to the Vice President of External Affairs.
Much like the "Goals for Tomorrow" soccer tournament, "Pitch for the Future" is our Fall semester scholarship fundraising event. We host a softball game and invite teams from all over UF's campus to play. The money raised goes toward one of SHPE's freshman members as scholarship. To know more about the "Pitch for the Future" tournament and how to get involved, talk to the Vice President of External Affairs.
SHPE Conference is touted as "the event" to go to. It's an annual three-day event held for SHPE members around the nation. Many industry leaders come and hold workshops and presentations, and many times offer internships to Conference go-ers, and the conference ends with a special performance on the last day. Overall it's a really good experience and every SHPE member is encouraged to go.

Ah, the sound of marching bands, crunch of helmets, and the general allure of SEC Football. It's a great experience, and there's no school better than the University of Florida at football (at least in 1996 and 2006). One of the great traditions is tailgating before the game, so we're all well fed and watered so we can cheer the Gators for a solid three hours! Remember, sitting not allowed in the student section!
No reason not to have some good times in the outdoors! SHPE-UF organizes barbecues from time to time, just for kicks and to really connect. It's more than just a club, it's really and truly a society, so let's be social!
There are many fairs throughout the school year, so we need to promote ourselves. E-fair on E-Week is the big one, and we work to put up a booth. Talk to the Vice President of Internal Affairs to know more and get involved.
SHPE goes to Lake Wauburg every semester and just chills. You should come. It's free and fun.**
SHPE often brings industry recruiters, grad students, and interms to speak to its members about their experiences and their company. It's a good way to get ahead of the game when it comes to internship and co-op industry recruiting.
Before each career fair, SHPE has a nice, lovely bar-be-cue outside of NEB and invites recruiters from the industry. It's a great idea to come -- free food, and you get a head start on the intern-snagging game!
Take a look at your fellow E. Board members! and find what area of SHPE interests you the most. SHPE lets you apply to become a part of its cabinet at the beginning of each semester and encourages you to join the cabinet at any time -- just talk to an E. board member.
The Executive Board, lovingly known as "the E board," is the governing body of the University of Florida Chapter of SHPE. Elections for the E-Board are held at the end of each Spring semester after an application process, and their supporting cast of cabinet members are selected in the beginning of the Fall semester.
Each executive and their cabinet is relegated to a specific area of SHPE business.
The President is responsible for overseeing all activities regardinig SHPE-UF, and ensuring that the member's needs are met.
